Musing On Nerd Culture: Resistance to Change

A thing that I’ve found to be increasingly frustrating when it comes to fandoms, ANY fandoms, is the overall resistance to even the slightest change to franchises, characters etc.

Now, I’m guilty of this too. I’m not exactly a fan of the DC relaunch or some of their attitudes to the characters over the years. For instance, their bizarre hatred of Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown...

Scarlet Traces - Part 1: War of the Worlds

I'd like to start a more in-depth look at the Scarlet Traces series, but first really it'd be appropriate to cover Edginton and D'Israeli's War of the Worlds adaptation first. If only because Scarlet Traces One and Two are direct sequels.

Interestingly it's actually already avaliable to read for free online, so it you want to look click below to check it out.

Avatar: the Search - Part 1 Review

And thus the next trilogy in the post-Airbender, pre-Korra Avatar comics continues, and attempts to answer one of the enduring questions left over from the original animated series: what happened to Prince Zuko's mother?

Does the oft hinted at story deliver? For the most part, yes. The interaction beween the various characters is very well done, the action is good and the story generally feels a lot more cohesive than the previous trilogy, the Promise. Maybe that's because this one focused mainly on just one overall plot as opposed to several different ones at once (which made the Promise somewhat disjointed in places), but generally speaking it just flowed better as a story this time.

The plot of this trade, and I WILL be going into spoilers here so beware, involves not just the titular search for Ursa, Zuko and Azula's mother, but also fleshes out her own backstory as well, providing more character to a woman who only appeared once in the Last Airbender, and that was in vague flashbacks. This is in addition to an increasingly insane Azula being brought along to help in the search, only for her to have a secret that could potentially get Zuko deposed as king and her put in his place.

M.A.N.C. - When is a Fridging Not A Fridging?

Or the balance between a character's death being an example of them being "shoved in a refrigerator", and the death making sense within the narrative and context of the story.

Contains spoilers for the most recent issue of Batman Inc. (#8), and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, so be warned.

Hannibal NBC Series Premiere Trailer

How I'd Do It: the Batman Film Reboot

With the Justice League film not uncertain, what with Warner Bros throwing out the most recent script in addition to the previously mentioned thing of how they won't approve it if Man of Steel doesn't do well, it now seems that the post-Nolan Batman reboot might be off the table for the time being. As in they might not make it until 2019 kind of off the table.

The question then rises as to how a post-Nolan Batman film would be made? Would it try to recapture the style of the billion dollar grossing Dark Knight Trilogy, or will it attempt something a bit more "toyetic" like the change in style from the Tim Burton Batman films to the Joel Schumacher ones?

First Frozen Teaser Posters Are Up

The first posters for Disney's upcoming adaption of the Snow Queen, renamed Frozen for the same reason that Rapunzel went by Tangled in some countries (boys don't see movies with references to girls in the titles, apparently) have been released! The heroine looks kind of like the heroine of the last movie that Disney made though...

Young Justice and GL:TAS Cancelled

I knew that this was coming, but this is still sad. :(

http://dcwomenkickingass.tumblr.com/post/41718072532/cartoon-network-schedule-does-not-include-young

EDIT:  Apparently the production staff knew since last year, but weren't allowed to tell anyone, and it wss a decision by Cartoon Network executives, NOT DC's animation branch it seems.

YJ: Invasion Episode 10 - Recap and Review

Cornered
Well it's been a couple of months since the show last airred, so it's probably necessary to do a recap first...

I think that it'd be easier just to link to the last review I did, which coincidentally was also for last week's episode.

We all caught up? Good, then let's begin.
